River song was younger when she met the doctor....in this photo she looks much older than she looked in Silence in the library...could she be playing another character?

It is possible, that she is another character here. Some might argue that they wouldn't get the same person to play two rolls, if one of the characters sparked such interest. To them I have two words MARTHA JONES. Freema played a pivital roll in the final episodes in Series 2, then when on the play Martha (a completely different person) in Series 3, 4 and Torchwood.

By the way, it is totally rude to say that a woman look "much older" when it has been less than 2 years since she played River Song. Furthermore, I think Alex looks fabulous and not a day older then she did on her first day of filming on ER!

Martha says it was her cousin who died at Torch wood and that is how they got around her playing two different roles.

Freema played a tiny part in series 2 - barely noticable.
Alex (River Song) played quite a decent role and was one of the main characters in two whole episodes so if she is playing the role of someone other than River Song here it will be much harder to cover up :)

Chances are, Alex is going to look older because she first played Riversong two years ago.

J. R. Miller:

they explained that with a "patty duke" type explaination, saying that martha and the woman from the series 2 finale were cousins.
apparently, identical cousins.
